Backup and Restore
The "automatic rdisk" from O&O BlueCon
XXL
O&O BlueCon XXL offers you a great opportunity:
secure and restore system configurations including the
entire registry. If your system crashes due to a badly
configured application, a service or a driver, you can
restore the original system status and get it up and
running again with minimum effort. The back-up command
works very much like NT's rdisk, but it saves your
security data on your hard disk rather than on a floppy.
If your system crashes, you can boot O&O BlueCon XXL
from a floppy or a CD-rom and start the restoration
process, reverting your system back to its old
condition.
Backup
The backup command copies the content of %SystemRoot%\system32\config
in the target folder you specify. This is actually the
registry including the local computer, software
and user database branches. It creates a new
subdirectory in the target folder with the current date
and an index for the name. The security data will be
stored in this subdirectory. If you choose differential
security, only the files that have been changed since
the last backup will be copied into a subdirectory with
the name 'incr'. This saves you space on your hard disk,
and time during startup. The option /h: leaves you the
decision as to how many backups O&O BlueCon XXL makes
open until the oldest version is overwritten. You can
configure the backup either through the control panel
menu or O&O BlueCon XXL's command line.
Restore
Restore replaces your current system configuration
with a new one, which is created by the backup command.
This can be very useful if your registry is defective or
you wish to correct bad modifications such as the
installation or deinstallation of software. For the
secured data, you have to give in the path that you used
for the backup. Restore lists all available backups and
you can choose which one should be restored.
Important note: If your system has more than
one operating system (NT 4.0 and Windows 2000), you
can't write an NT 4.0-Backup to a Windows 2000 system!
For such cases, O&O BlueCon XXL offers an easy method
of securing your critical system configuration data at
startup. You can restore them later with O&O BlueCon XXL
if your system crashes or if you want to reset bad
configurations, e.g. bad drivers. O&O BlueCon offers
various backup options for individual configuration of
the backup process.
Complete or differential security
You can choose between a complete securing at startup
or just secure the files that have been changed since
the last backup. The latter option is useful if you only
have limited space on your hard disk. Whichever option
you choose, O&O BlueCon XXL can restore in full the last
configuration by using the latest backups on your
system.
Backup temporary files
You can specify the maximum number of backup
temporary files for O&O BlueCon to save to your hard
disk. When the maximum number is reached, the oldest
temporary files will be overwritten. This number can lie
between 0 and 999, 0 standing for an unlimited number of
temporary files. If you choose, this option, please
don't forget to make sure you have enough space on your
hard disk, or you can manually delete backup data from
time to time. |
