Windows XP/2000/NT ensures the security of your system in various ways; for example, a user has to log in before accessing system and user data. To guarantee system security, O&O BlueCon XXL demands the administrator user account and password at the startup of the local hard disk. A further security feature is offered by the NTFS file system. For example, system-critical files cannot be changed or deleted when the system is up and running (e.g. the registry and pagefile).
O&O BlueCon XXL and system security - what you should know!
If you start O&O BlueCon XXL from a floppy or CD-Rom, you are not required to log in to the system. For this reason, you should specify a password when you create the O&O BlueCon Boot-CD which will be demanded when the O&O BlueCon Boot-CD is used. In this way you can reset or change lost or forgotten passwords, you regain access to your system and at the same time restrict access by means of the Boot CD's external password. Logging on to a local installation of O&O BlueCon XXL has consequences for system security. Since the program runs in the blue screen of Windows XP/2000/NT, users do not usually have to log in before gaining access to data. To guarantee system security, O&O BlueCon uses the built-in administrator user account.

Important Note
Please always keep in mind that a physically bootable system can be started from a floppy or CD-rom and that unauthorized persons can gain access to your system in this way. Even with the normal Windows XP/2000/NT setup, it is possible to carry out a parallel installation and thereby access all of the files on the local hard disk. If you have sensitive information on your system, we recommend you use encoding software or hardware in order to prevent unauthorized access.

Change or reset passwords
O&O BlueCon XXL offers you the 'PASSWD'-command to change or reset user passwords. In this case, the same restriction as in the last paragraph apply - you have to access the system from a local installation and need no information about the account if you boot from a floppy or CD. Changing or resetting the password should be the last resort when gaining access to a system. O&O BlueCon XXL can't "crack" an existing password. It can only change or reset passwords.
