File caching is meant to improve the speed of accessing files. When they are read again, the system can retrieve them from the faster memory, instead of reading from the slower hard disk. Windows accesses your hard disk for reading and writing through its integrated File Cache Management. Windows XP/2000/NT is not so efficient, however, when managing the file cache on its own. It allocates main memory for the file cache even when it is no longer available for running applications. If applications request new memory, the system is forced to swap out segments of memory into the paging file located on the hard disk, requiring time-consuming read/write access. Paradoxically, in this situation file caching, meant to improve system performance, actually leads to a dramatic decrease in system performance by acting as a speed brake for your computer. This is where O&O CleverCache V6.0 comes in and solves this problem by instituting it own smarter cache management system.

O&O CleverCache V6.0 solves this problem by taking control over the resource management for file caching and applications. It prevents heavy system loading and guarantees the availability of a certain amount of memory. Applications can now allocate memory without forcing Windows to swap. This leads to a performance increase and to lower response times, especially if you are running many applications at the same time and tend to switch between them quite often. How the File Cache Reduces Memory Resources
The larger the file cache grows, the less memory is available for running applications. The result is a significant performance decrease, as requests for memory can lead to the so-called "swapping", i.e. currently unused portions of memory are paged out to NT's paging file. The slow hard disk access is responsible for the loss of performance of Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.

The figure above explains how O&O CleverCache V6.0 can help. The graph describes the amount of available memory used when a large file is loaded. The green graph is the memory available on a system using O&O CleverCache, while the red graph represents a system without this software installed. As you can see, the usage of memory on the system without O&O CleverCache is significantly higher than on the system with O&O CleverCache. The level of the file cache is kept constant after a certain amount of time, preserving memory resources for other applications and preventing the above mentioned swapping.

The optimum level for the file cache is automatically determined by O&O CleverCache V6.0 and adjusted according to the available memory. Hidden resources of your system will be activated without any need for user interaction.

Even More Performance with Mem-O-Free
O&O CleverCache V6.0 also includes Mem-O-Free technology. Mem-O-Free gives you control over the amount of available memory under Windows when the system is running. Whenever the amount of free memory falls below the user-defined threshold, Mem-O-Free will be activated and free additional memory, forcing Windows to swap unneeded data to the hard disk. The result is more available memory for active applications and thus higher performance.

Keeping Data Safe with Mem-O-Safe
When you save data to the hard disk, they are not immediately written to disk, but buffered in the internal file cache. After a certain amount of time, these data are written to the disk. How long this takes is determined by Windows, leaving users out the decision process. Windows considers system load as well as other parameters in determining the update interval, usually between 4 and 15 seconds. If during this period a system failure occurs, all data that has not been written to disk is lost. Critical data may be lost, sometime necessitating a re-installation of Windows. This situation often occurs during a power failure, user error, or a system crash.

O&O CleverCache V6.0, with its Mem-O-Safe technology, lets you control and configure the update interval of the file cache on important file servers, for example, to minimize possible losses of data. The configuration of the interval can be changed through the O&O CleverCache V6 applet found in the Control Panel.
